INDIGENA BIODIVERSITY is a British-based company that helps biodiversity-rich countries to benefit from their local genetic resources. We identify species that may have a commercial use; and act as a foreign partner for the country of origin and local communities.
Naturally occurring genetic materials, including plant species, provide a huge untapped resource for the development of commercial products for human well-being. Man's knowledge of biodiversity is small compared to the vast number of organisms that have yet to be explored. Indeed, it is estimated that we have not even discovered the majority of species that exist on Earth.
But access to plant species and marine organisms from other countries is now much more difficult than it used to be. There is a highly regulated access process, governed by the biodiversity provisions in each country where the resources are endemic.
We can take the stress out of that process. We provide genetic resources from around the world:
We have expertise in operating under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Nagoya Protocol. We deal with the local access regulations both in the source country and requirements of the European biodiversity directive.
INDIGENA
also ensures that a share of any benefit from the commercialisation of products derived from plant material is returned to country of origin.
